AI the Right Way

Thinking about using AI to support call handling or ease pressure on your reception team? You’re not alone – and you’re asking the right questions.

But before you plug in any new AI technology, it pays to pause and plan, we’ve distilled the essentials into 10 smart moves to help you get the most out of AI – safely, effectively, and in a way that fits your practice.

Whether you’re curious or already on the journey, this list will help you make confident, informed choices:

  1. Start with the problem, not the tech: Focus on unmet needs – like missed calls, long wait times, or overburdened staff.
  2. Be clear on your outcomes: Are you aiming to reduce admin time? Improve patient satisfaction? Prioritise.
  3. Engage your users early: Your team know the real pressure points – involve them from the start.
  4. Prioritise explainability: Choose systems that make their logic transparent and build trust.
  5. Focus on interoperability-readiness: Make sure the solution can complement the systems and workflows you already use.
  6. Use real-world testing: Don’t guess. Test the solution first with a phased rollout focusing on a limited user group.
  7. Have a safety net: AI tools should always be able to escalate to a trained human when needed.
  8. Think about equity: Consider how different patient groups – especially those with language or access needs – will experience the AI.
  9. Plan for monitoring and learning: Build in regular reviews of performance and patient feedback.
  10. Stay human: Patients expect empathy. Choose an AI Solution that speaks conversationally, naturally, and in a tone that reflects your practice.

📖 Whitepaper Watch: Smarter Triage & Navigation in the NHS

The Tony Blair Institute has published a bold new vision for healthcare, calling for a nationwide AI Navigation Assistant to help patients get to the right care faster – and reduce the pressure on overstretched services.

Their message is clear: smarter triage and patient navigation powered by AI could be transformational. The current system is fragmented, inefficient and labour-intensive. With AI, the NHS could save up to 29 million GP appointments a year, free up clinical time, and drastically improve access and outcomes.

Highlights from the whitepaper:

• Most NHS access points (111, 999, GP phone lines) still rely on outdated, manual systems
• Patients are often sent to the wrong place – or bounce between services
• AI can improve speed, consistency and safety – while boosting workforce productivity
• A fully integrated digital triage model is not just possible, it’s essential
